THIS IS MY WHY

At the age of 2, I was diagnosed with a rare eye cancer called Retinoblastoma. Sadly I lost my vision in my left eye at a very early age, eventually requiring surgery to remove the affected eye altogether. I’ve lived with an artificial eye ever since. My journey into fitness and health began from a desire to perform as an athlete, at the highest possible level, regardless of whatever obstacles I was faced with.

Like most, having overindulged during my first year of university (lots of alcohol and fast food), I promised myself I was going to get in shape and never let myself go again.

From January 2012 to August 2012 I went from 115kg to 92kg and during the course of this process, I made many mistakes in terms of my approach to training – lessons that I can now look back on and say I’ve learned invaluable lessons from.

After graduating in 2015 I decided to play American Football, but I wasn’t satisfied with playing for leisure; the goal for me was to get myself in a position where I would be ready to showcase my skills in the United States. Picking up a foreign sport at a late age with professional aspirations would always be challenging, but one I reveled at nonetheless. I was excited to test myself and see how far I could take it, especially given that much of what I would achieve would be self-taught.

To increase my chances of success, I had to incorporate training principles associated with Sport Performance and Strength & Conditioning. As I did not have the luxury of having a designated Performance Coach like many prospective professional athletes in America did, I had to expand and deepen my expertise through my research and execution, whilst also juggling a full-time job.

As I began growing in confidence with my skills, I encountered a pivotal point in my journey that I certainly did not plan for. Towards the end of 2016, I dislocated my left ankle which resulted in me having to undergo Ankle Ligament Reconstruction surgery with Syndesmotic Screw Fixation. The severity of the injury required a further two procedures and complications during the healing process meant that I had to accept constant pain in my foot due to developing Anterior Ankle Impingement.

After recovering from my third surgery in late 2017 the pain and complications still persisted, I remained committed to the pursuit of the goals I had set out. By December 2018 I took a leap of faith to travel to America and compete at the BSN Combine in Indianapolis in February 2019.

I performed very well and my performances warranted interest from an NFL agent with who I eventually signed. I was then invited to the XFL Showcase in Washington DC in June 2019 where I also did well.

As a survivor of Retinoblastoma cancer, I know firsthand what it’s like to have adversity staring back at you when all you want is to achieve your personal goals. Life throws up various challenges, be it physical or mental and I take great pride in having been able to overcome these on my personal journey. Now, it’s about helping others to do the same.
